Position

Bus aides are assigned to special education bus routes to assist the school bus driver and students while they are being transported to and from school; to ensure their safe transportation and to provide assistance when entering and exiting the school bus; and to provide assistance with student health care.

 

Qualifications

  • High School education or equivalent preferred
  • Ability and willingness to be trained in CPR and First Aid (training provided)
  • Ability and willingness to be trained to assist with students who are medically fragile and have special medical needs
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with students, parents, teachers and district personnel at all levels
  • Ability to meet time schedules
  • Ability to work varying route assignments
  • Physical ability to pull, push, reach, bend and walk
  • Successfully pass the bus aide agility test
  • Ability to work both AM & PM bus routes every weekday. This is a split-shift position

 

Essential Duties   

  • Assist school bus driver while the bus is in operation and with emergencies and with bus evacuations
  • Assist the school bus driver special education students to provide for special needs during transport to include safe loading and unloading from buses during normal and emergency transport
  • Instruct special education students and/or other passengers in the rules and regulations to maintain safety on the school bus
  • Monitor students on and/or around the buses to ensure the safety and welfare of the students
  • Assist in the implementation of strategies to manage student behavior
  • Report observations and incidents (i.e. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc) and communicate information to appropriate district personnel
  • Secure students with safety equipment (i.e. safety vest, seat belts, wheelchairs and tie downs, car seats, etc) to ensure the safety and welfare of students
  • Assist bus drivers in school bus post-trip checks; assist relief drivers with routines and route destinations
  • Complete all required paperwork; attend all required meetings
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Regular and on-time attendance required

 

Marginal Duties

  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
