JOB TITLE:        Substitute Teacher

Mesa Public Schools uses an automated system, SmartFind Express, to offer assignments to substitute teachers via phone, web, or smartphone app.  Substitute teachers can indicate their availability, and location and classroom preferences to personalize the substitute teaching opportunities that are offered

Daily Rate:

$140.00 w/AZ substitute or emergency certificate ($180/day for long-term assignments

$170.00 w/valid AZ teaching certificate ($200/day for long-term assignments)

Long-term assignments are assignments that are expected to last more than 20 days

Assignments 4.5 hours and less are considered a half day and will be paid at half the daily rate

 

Required during application completion:

  • Contact information of your last 3 employers, supervisor, or HR department. Please provide this information in the reference section of the application (required by AZ statute)If you have been with your current or most recent employer for more than five years, then that is the only employer contact information needed. 
  • Upload a valid Level One IVP fingerprint clearance card (contact gov if needed).
  • Upload a valid AZ teaching or substitute certificate (bachelor’s degree required, azed.gov) OR indicate need for sponsorship of an emergency substitute certificate (high school transcripts are required for an emergency substitute certificate).
  • Within 1-2 business days of receiving your application, you will be sent a one-way video interview. Completion of the one-way video interview is required.

It is the responsibility of the substitute teacher to hold and maintain an IVP fingerprint clearance card and AZ substitute or teaching certificate.

 

OVERVIEW:  The substitute teacher is responsible for assuming the normal duties of the classroom teacher.

 

The classroom teacher will lead students toward the fulfillment of their potential by translating the district curriculum standards and objectives into meaningful learning experiences through classroom instruction and indirectly through special area assignments. The teacher is responsible for maintaining a positive and appropriate educational environment and creating a program that meets the intellectual and emotional needs of all students.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate or a valid Arizona substitute certificate
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance card
  • Demonstrates knowledge of related subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials.
  • Utilizes a variety of effective instructional and management techniques.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and effective professional relationships with teachers, administrators, parents, students
  • Ability to use district technology
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with parents and school personnel at all levels

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of related subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials
  • Utilizes a variety of effective instructional and management techniques
  • Considers the individual learning needs and abilities of students, as well as school and district learning goals, in preparation and utilization of lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessment documents
  • Utilizes district-adopted textbooks and curriculum guides in instructional planning and implementation
  • Utilizes district technology
  • Incorporates higher level thinking strategies and real-life applications into lesson planning
  • Creates instructional and assessment materials that align with learning objectives and method of instruction
  • Uses available technology or instructional media to enhance the students’ learning experiences
  • Continuously and accurately collects student achievement data using a variety of tools (e.g., tests, projects, demonstrations, checklists). Utilizes this information to make instructional and management decisions that will positively impact student achievement
  • Establishes, supports, and administers positive classroom management in accordance with regulations
  • Establishes positive and appropriate relationships with students and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents concerning academic and behavioral progress
  • Works with parents and school personnel representatives to provide an appropriate education for each student
  • Produces, utilizes, and maintains student records that relate to student achievement, attendance and discipline
  • Provides a positive and safe environment that is conducive to learning
  • Takes an active role in establishing and supporting school goals and resolving school concerns
  • Communicates an expectation of success for all students

  • Adheres to the Statement of Awareness/Understanding adopted by the MUSD Governing Board, and complies with the Meet and Confer Agreement

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and extra-curricular/school-related activities and committees
